The Brain Dump Method for Creatives: Turn Mental Chaos into Tiny Steps
Your mind has 87 tabs open. Here's how a five-minute brain dump closes them — and how to sort the mess into steps you'll actually take.
What is a brain dump?
A brain dump is exactly what it sounds like: pouring everything in your head — every task, worry, idea, half-thought and nagging "I should..." — out onto paper or a screen, without sorting, judging or formatting.
If you're a creative with ADHD, your mind is probably a browser with 87 tabs open. A brain dump closes the tabs, without losing them.
Why it works (especially for creatives and ADHD brains)
1. It frees working memory. Your brain treats unfinished, un-captured thoughts as open loops. Every loop quietly burns attention. Writing things down closes the loop — the thought can stop nagging you because it's safe somewhere.
2. It kills the blank-page problem. Creatives freeze when output has to be organised. A brain dump has zero quality bar. Messy is the point.
3. It reveals patterns. Dumped onto one page, you can finally see what's actually on your plate — and half of it usually isn't urgent at all.
How to do a brain dump properly
- Set a timer for 5 minutes. Short enough that you can't dread it.
- Dump everything. Tasks, feelings, ideas, reminders, random worries. No order, no categories. Write it exactly as it lands in your head.
- Stop when the timer ends. Don't tidy it up yet.
- Highlight the 1–3 things that are genuinely time-sensitive. Not important — time-sensitive. Most things aren't.
- Turn a few of the rest into tiny next steps. "Sort the portfolio" becomes "choose 3 images for the front page."
- Park everything else. The rest goes into a safe place — a vault, a list, a second brain. Not now ≠ never.
The mistake almost everyone makes
They dump, feel briefly amazing, then never look at it again. A brain dump only works if the mess gets sorted into next steps — and that step is where ADHD brains lose energy.
That's exactly why we built brain dumping into Momentum Monkey: you pour out the mess, and the AI quietly sorts it into tiny, energy-matched steps and suggests the next one. You do the dumping; the organising happens for you.
